Really Easy Responsive Columns in WordPress 2 – the Plugin Solution

17 Jan , 2014

The Problem

What I was after was a plugin that would let me put columns into wordpress blogs. I didn’t want to be tied to a particular theme. I just wanted a plugin that would work with any theme at all. I also wanted the columns to collapse down into one column for mobile sizes.

The Old Solution

My previous solution was to use Justin Tadlock’s Grid Columns plugin. This is a great columns plugin in almost every way. The one downside was it didn’t collapse down to single column at smaller widths. To solve this I went into his plugin’s CSS and wrapped the whole lot in a media query.

I wrote about it.

It worked like a charm.

I knew that this probably wasn’t the way to go after Justin updated the plugin and I realised I would have to go and re-edit the code again. Also I received some excellent constructive criticism in the comments!

New Solution!

So my new solution is still to download Justin’s Grid Columns plugin but also my new plugin – the awsomely named Grid Columns Collapse. Put these in your plugins folder and activate them.

The settings are in the Plugins dropdown in your wp-admin.

The width that the Collapse plugin kicks in is at 650px but you can change that in the plugin settings. Hope it helps!

      Hi there Anthony,
Really really sorry about that –
I recently changed my site’s servers and this was a file that got overlooked in the transfer :'(
Thanks for letting me know about it, much appreciated! It’s up there now – let me know how you get on!

btw – moving servers with a wordpress site is bleurgh!
